Host / Hostess

Role

The Host / Hostess is responsible for providing a warm, professional, and welcoming first impression to all guests entering the restaurant. The role manages guest reception, assists with reservations, coordinates seating with the service team, and ensures smooth guest flow in line with the restaurant’s service standards. The Host / Hostess plays a key role in shaping the overall guest experience from arrival to departure.

Reporting to: Head Host / Head Hostess

Key Responsibilities

Guest Reception & Welcome

  • Greet all guests warmly, professionally, and in accordance with brand standards.
  • Ensure guests feel welcomed, acknowledged, and assisted upon arrival.
  • Provide accurate information regarding wait times, table availability, and restaurant offerings.
  • Escort guests to their tables in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Bid farewell to guests upon departure, ensuring a positive final impression.

Reservation Handling

  • Assist in managing reservations through the booking system and maintain accurate records.
  • Answer phone calls and respond to guest inquiries in a professional manner.
  • Support walk-in guests by coordinating availability with the Head Host / Head Hostess.
  • Update reservation status, no-shows, cancellations, and guest notes as required.
  • Ensure all guest information is recorded accurately and confidentially maintained.

Seating Coordination

  • Coordinate closely with the service team to ensure smooth and efficient seating of guests.
  • Follow table allocation plans provided by the Head Host / Floor Manager.
  • Assist in managing guest flow during peak periods to minimize waiting time.
  • Ensure tables are properly prepared before seating guests.
  • Communicate effectively with waiters regarding guest arrivals and table readiness.

Guest Service Support

  • Assist guests with basic inquiries about menu, timings, and restaurant services.
  • Handle guest requests politely and escalate concerns to senior team members when required.
  • Maintain a friendly, attentive, and professional attitude at all times.
  • Support VIP arrivals and special occasion setups as directed.

Restaurant Operations

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the reception, entrance, and waiting areas.
  • Ensure menus, signage, and guest materials are presentable and updated.
  • Assist in maintaining a smooth guest flow between reception and dining areas.
  • Support opening and closing duties of the reception area.

Communication & Coordination

  • Communicate clearly with the service team, kitchen, and management regarding guest arrivals and table status.
  • Participate in daily briefings and follow instructions from supervisors.
  • Ensure smooth coordination between front-of-house departments.

Compliance & Standards

  • Follow company SOPs for guest greeting, seating, and reservation handling.
  • Maintain confidentiality of guest information and bookings.
  • Adhere to health, safety, and hygiene standards.
  • Maintain professional grooming and presentation at all times.

Self-Learning & Development

  • Attend training sessions to improve guest service and communication skills.
  • Learn restaurant menu basics, promotions, and service procedures.
  • Develop strong knowledge of reservation systems and guest handling standards.
  • Demonstrate willingness to grow within the hospitality team.

Pre-requisites

  • Minimum 0–2 years of experience in hospitality or customer service, preferably in restaurants or hotels.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic understanding of guest service etiquette.
  • Familiarity with reservation systems is an advantage.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in busy environments.
  • Positive attitude, willingness to learn, and team spirit.
  • Good grooming and presentation standards.
